RAMEN — Tuesday 25th Aug ‘26

I love ramen. Eating it reminds me of those guys that dredge the canal for metal. Down into the murky waters go my chopsticks and up comes a tangled web of noodles, vegetables and those little water chestnut things.

Ramen is about as perfect as a meal could get for me.

It’s hard AND wet, it’s got carbs, protein and fibre. It’s so easy to make. Although I have net had two japanese truck drivers turn up to my house to teach me how to make good broth :( So perhaps I only think it’s easy because my version is crap.

But I’m not making ramen for those two japanese truckers, I’m making ramen for ME and (sometimes) my loved ones.

I love the permission to slurp. I love the way that steam rises off a fresh bowl. I love the journey that you go on with a bowl of ramen. You dig at your dish with your chopsticks, then you scoop at it with those spoons that have NO other use than this. They are ramen spoons. They will only ever be ramen spoons. They are not interested in other dishes, other dishes are not interested in them.

After you’ve done scooping and dredging the bottom of the pool, you can tip up the bowl and slurp a sob-full of noodle tea down you.

Then it’s just you and the dregs, sweetcorn, spring onion, the little slivers of bok choy that escaped your gaping maw.

They will all be collected too. Up tips the bowl and with a few taps of encouragement from your chopsticks, the dregs end up where they belong.

I haven’t worked out a way to do this that doesn’t make me look like a greedy oaf, but I will make no apologies for greed when there is a bowl of ramen in front of me.

Oh ALSO, if you go out for ramen, you get a little mint at the end, or you do at the place I go anyway.
